We are an authentic and inclusive community where everyone belongs and has the opportunity to choose to grow and live out their faith. We provide a safe place to explore who you are and what difference you can make in the world. All youth are welcome to participate in youth ministry programs, regardless of their church affiliation or place in their faith journey. Confirmation is a series of classes that prepare a student to publicly confirm their intention to live the vows that were made at their baptism and become a professing member of the United Methodist Church. An opportunity for students to come together in fellowship to laugh, play, eat (if you want!) and engage in relevant discussions. We occasionally schedule off-site activities and retreats. Uniquely dedicated and driven by what matters most to the youth. Students will help select the curriculum or discussion topics that allows for asking lots of questions, digging deeper, exploring the Bible, and talking about how we live our faith. The youth of WAUMC have a long-standing tradition of serving with the Appalachia Service Project to help make homes warmer, safer, and drier for the people of Central Appalachia. Most recently, students from BSA Troop 21 and the surrounding community have joined this summer mission trip. In 2025, a group of 36 students and 15 adults went to Kentucky in support of ASP! We are so excited to offer classes and worship for our families, members and visitors alike! You will be welcomed with a smile as our team helps you to get checked in as we begin our large group time together! The nursery caregivers provide children with safe and fun childcare during worship and faith formation. As they are able, they engage kids in age-appropriate Bible stories and songs. Kids will stay in worship with their adults for the beginning of the worship service through Young Disciples Time. They will then be dismissed to Kids Church before the sermon to participate in an age-appropriate message, activities, discussion, prayers, and worship songs. Most recently, in November 2019, we formalized our “all are welcome” positions and became a Reconciling Congregation. In addition to worship services, adult education classes, children’s Sunday School and many other in-church activities, we strengthen our faith by sharing God’s love throughout the community and the world. We provide hands-on, financial and prayer support for more than 15 local, national and international mission efforts. A few examples of long-time and more-recent worthy causes include making bag lunches and muffins for The Gathering, collecting nonperishable food, clothing and personal hygiene items for Tosa Community Food Pantry now located in our building, Rooted and Rising and other social service agencies, and providing Hawley Road Environmental School students with literacy support. We’ve helped build 24 Habitat for Humanity houses, sent youth and adults to work on multiple Appalachian Service Projects and financially supported a missionary in Africa for many years. Our longest-running support is as sponsor of BSA Troop 21 since 1922 and counting! We have a Mission Room where people gather to make mats, knitted items and other projects to help locally and through Midwest Mission. Everyone is invited to help. United Methodism was formed when the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged in 1968. We trace our spiritual heritage back to 18th century leaders, including John and Charles Wesley, Francis Asbury, Philip Otterbein, Martin Boehm and Jacob Albright. We are a people of faith-based action. As the familiar song goes, “We’ve a story to tell to the nations.” Ours is the gospel story, “A story of truth and mercy, a story of peace and light.” We are a covenant people. When joining a United Methodist church, we promise God and our fellow congregants that we will uphold the church with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. We are a curious people who encourage and trust in free inquiry on matters of Christian doctrine. Our faith is guided by Bible scripture, tradition, experience and reason. This service is usually held in our Chapel, one floor up from the main entrance. **9:30am Faith and Fellowship (Kids, Youth, Adults) -** We have many rotating class offerings during faith formation time! Fellowship time takes place in Fellowship Hall, right next to the main entrance **10:45am Traditional Service -** Join us Sundays in person or online. This service offers traditional worship style with music from our choir, bells & organ. This service is held in our Sanctuary, one floor up from the main entrance. **Summer Worship Schedule -** From Memorial Day through Labor Day, we offer one blended worship at 9:00am, followed by Fellowship. Our services meet you where you're at - whether you are brand new or have been worshipping with us for years. You can expect services of about 45 minutes and during this time, you will experience readings from the bible, a sermon, a time of prayer, and you will hear special music from music groups such as our choir, praise band, handbell choir, or guest musicians. Come as you are – we’re glad you want to join us! You’ll find that people wear a range of clothing, from suits and ties to cropped pants and sandals, even jerseys! We are happy you are here, no matter how you look or what you wear! We welcome all people to gather as friends, grow in faith and share God’s love. As a testament to our mission of social justice, we embrace Jesus Christ’s example of an open heart and open mind by affirming and cherishing people of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, ages, physical and mental abilities, education, economic status and religious affiliations. We open our doors to everyone to participate fully in the life, fellowship, leadership, ministry, rites and sacraments of our church. We love having children join us for worship! We encourage children and their parents to worship together as they hear God's Word and sing his praise. But we know that having children in church can be a challenge and we never want that to be a hindrance to coming to worship. We do provide a staffed nursery and Kids Church during services. Additionally, we have children's activity bags on hand for those who stay in the service. Sunday School is offered at 9:30am, after the Modern Worship service and before the Traditional Worship service. Access our church parking lot from Underwood Avenue (one block west of Wauwatosa Ave) and directly across the street from the Wauwatosa Fire Station. There is also street parking on Underwood Avenue and there are also several free public lots (covered and uncovered) within walking distance of WAUMC. It begins a process of growth in grace and holiness. We baptize infants, children, as well as adult believers wishing to become part of the church, but we do not re-baptize people. In the United Methodist Church, we baptize by immersion, the pouring of water or sprinkling (the most frequently used method. Couples **do not** need to be church members to be married at WAUMC. WAUMC became a Reconciling Congregation in 2019 and a formal Marriage Equality Policy was approved at that time. Our Marriage Equality Policy treats **ALL** couples the same, regardless of sexual orientation, race, or religion and enforces the language in our Welcoming Statement. *"We open our doors to everyone to participate fully in the life, fellowship, leadership, ministry, rites, and sacraments of our church"* The deceased or their families do not need to be church members to be buried through WAUMC. The pastor conducts the service, which may include hymns, a sermon, and a eulogy by a close friend or family member. We provide high-quality sound and wireless mic systems in all of our worship spaces and have the ability to stream and record video with our robotic cameras. But the technology will always need one vital thing for it to work... you! We are always looking for volunteers to assist with running audio and video for our worship services. And the best part is, it's EASY! All of our systems are configured for very simple operation, and our tech team can get you trained and ready in a matter of minutes! We also have a variety of extra opportunities to serve through special events such as weddings, funerals, and other church functions where additional help is needed. In 2024, an observant parishioner noticed what appeared to be a hole in the plaster surrounding the window.   Gilbertson Stained-Glass Studio was called and, using a drone, found the window was beginning to bow outward due to the weakness of the lead and the weight of the glass itself along with multiple cracks in the lead that hold the individual pieces of glass together.  Representatives from Gilbertson advised the church that the window would have to be restored by 2025/2026 or risk the window falling out. This information, as well as a report by Ed Gilbertson, was given to the Accountable Leadership Board (ALB) for discussion in mid-2024.  The ALB decided to authorize the repair of the window during the summer of 2025.  There was a brief discussion about launching a capital campaign to cover the costs, but given that the church would be getting a new pastor in 2025, it was concluded that the time was not right for a campaign. The ALB and the Endowment Committee agreed that the funds could be drawn from the Lucy Neff account and those funds were frozen to ensure that this $120,360 repair project would be covered.  This project has been divided among 5 contractors that have worked flawlessly together to make the project go smoothly. This repair was able to be approved by the ALB due to the endowments that were already available.  The Endowment Committee is actively seeking donations to cover the cost of this repair and allow the Lucy Neff Fund be replenished for future, unexpected projects. ***We have already raised $48,000 of the cost!*** WAUMC applied for and was awarded a $25,000 grant from the George F. Moss Foundation.  In addition, $23,000 has been donated from current parishioners toward the window restoration. Your donation will help toward the long-term preservation of this glorious window which serves as the focal point of our worship in the Sanctuary. If you have questions about making a legacy gift to the church, please contact Pastor Krysta, Pastor Deb, or Wendy Kamerling, Chair of the Endowment Committee. Sunday September 21, 2025 at the 10:45am service, we will gather in the Sanctuary to dedicate the refurbished Gethsemane Window and the restoration of our pipe organ.
